Sessio VIII -- A Statue For Liberty?

Giuliano leans slightly closer to Avicellus, speaking in a quieter tone to avoid being overheard. “You probably guessed already, but my trouble yesterday wasn't just about some goods. The Bardi and the Medici have been at each other’s throats for years, and things are heating up again. The Medici are tightening their grip, and anyone who deals with the Bardi—like me—is a target.”

Avicellus nods, encouraging Giuliano to continue. “The Bardi are trying to push back, but they need allies—strong ones. Vittoria Bardi, the youngest of the house, is seen as someone who could change the game. She’s clever, ambitious, and has been quietly gathering support. People talk about her as if she’s just another noble, but she’s more than that. If anyone is going to shift the balance of power, it’ll be her.”

Avicellus learns that Giuliano is more than just a minor player. He’s involved with the movement to support Vittoria Bardi, hoping she’ll weaken the Medici’s control over Florence. However, the Bardi’s power is still fragile, and they are vulnerable to the Medici’s ruthless tactics. Giuliano seems conflicted, caught between loyalty to the Bardi and fear of the Medici’s reprisal.

From this, Avicellus can gather that the Medici will be a major threat in the coming days, and siding with the Bardi may come with significant risks but could shift the political landscape, Vittoria Bardi is not just a pawn but potentially a key figure in Florence’s future power struggle, and that Giuliano could be a useful contact if Avicellus decides to involve himself further in Florence’s internal conflicts.

Avicellus asks Giuliano to arrange a private meeting between him and Vittoria Bardi. How soon can he arrange it?

Giuliano considers the request carefully, his brow furrowing. “It won’t be easy,” he says, glancing around as if to make sure they aren’t being overheard. “Vittoria is cautious—rightfully so, given the Medici spies everywhere. But if I vouch for you, I think I can arrange something.”

He pauses, then continues, “Give me two days. I’ll send word to you at the safehouse in Settignano with the time and place. She prefers to meet in places where she can control the environment, so don’t be surprised if it’s somewhere unexpected.”

With that, Giuliano nods, looking a bit nervous but resolute. “Just be careful. The wrong move, and we’ll all be in deeper trouble than we can handle.”

Avicellus returns to the safehouse with the intention of laying low until he hears from Giuliano. He will spend the time trying to use his Magical Engineering skill to get a sense of which artifact would be most appropriate to offer Vittoria. Of course, once he meets her, he may learn more and change his mind about the selection (or offering her one at all), but he thinks it would be helpful to have some sense of a course of action in advance.

As Avicellus spends time in the safehouse, reflecting on the masks and the statue, he focuses his magical engineering skills on understanding the artifacts further.

He ultimately decides that, even though he doesn’t fully understand its powers, he should offer the Sage Statue to Vittoria. The serenity, enlightenment, and wisdom that it seems to offer could be of great value to a woman seeking to cultivate responsible leadership while navigating the treachery of tyrants.

Nothing out of the ordinary happens during the two days, though Avicellus keeps a low profile, avoiding drawing attention to his whereabouts. He awaits Giuliano’s contact, feeling prepared for his upcoming meeting with Vittoria.

On the evening of the second day, a discreet messenger arrives with a note from Giuliano, indicating that the meeting with Vittoria Bardi has been arranged for the following night at a private location in the outskirts of Florence.

Avicellus conceals the Sage Statue within the folds of his robes, tucking it into a hidden pocket near his chest where it can rest securely but remain easily accessible. Its weight is a comforting reminder of the choice he may soon make, but he ensures it is well hidden so that it doesn’t draw unwanted attention.

Once prepared, he heads toward the location of his arranged meeting with Vittoria Bardi, keeping a cautious eye on his surroundings, alert for any potential danger or intrigue. The streets of Florence seem unusually quiet as he makes his way, but the tension in the air is palpable.

The meeting spot Giuliano arranged is semi-private—an upper-floor loggia in a quiet Florentine palazzo owned by one of Vittoria Bardi's family allies. The loggia overlooks a secluded garden, with arched openings providing both fresh air and a view of the greenery below. Though technically outdoors, it feels enclosed enough to offer a degree of privacy, and its position on the upper floor keeps the space away from prying eyes and casual passersby.

The palazzo is located near the outskirts of the city, away from the crowded, bustling heart of Florence. A few trusted guards stand at the entrance, but they don’t seem particularly on edge, indicating a controlled environment.

The meeting is set for early afternoon, around 2 PM. The sun is shining brightly, casting warm light through the arched openings of the loggia, illuminating the vibrant greenery of the garden below. The warmth of the day adds a sense of ease to the atmosphere, although Avicellus may still feel the weight of the political undertones surrounding the meeting.

Avicellus arrives early to scope out the situation, even though he is not likely to be granted admittance until the agreed-upon time. Using Shadow Meld from his mask, he employs stealth to look around the loggia and see what observations he can make.

As Avicellus activates the Shadow Meld ability of his mask, he feels the shadows embrace him, enhancing his stealth as he moves through the loggia with practiced ease. He takes the time to carefully observe the surroundings, noting a small group of three individuals—a woman and two men—seated on a bench in a shaded corner of the loggia. They seem engaged in a quiet discussion. One of the men, slightly older with a well-groomed beard, frequently glances toward the entrance, indicating that he might be anticipating someone.

He also spots a pair of guards stationed discreetly at the entrance to the loggia. They appear alert but not overly tense, suggesting that while they are vigilant, they are not expecting trouble. Their armor bears the insignia of the Bardi family, a clear indication of their loyalty.

As Avicellus looks closer, he notices a faint rustling sound from a nearby bush. Two figures—cloaked and hooded—are positioned a short distance away, clearly attempting to eavesdrop on the meeting. They exchange whispered words, but their intentions remain obscured.

He catches a glimpse of Vittoria entering from a side door of the loggia, accompanied by a stern-looking advisor. She seems composed and carries herself with a quiet confidence. Avicellus senses her authority, even from a distance.

As Avicellus approaches the guards, they regard him with a mix of curiosity and professionalism. One of the guards, a burly man with a neatly trimmed beard, steps forward.

“State your business, traveler,” he says, his tone firm yet not unfriendly.

Avicellus nods slightly, maintaining a calm demeanor. “I am Avicellus, here to meet with Lady Vittoria Bardi at the appointed time. I seek her audience.”

The guard looks at his companion, who gives a slight nod in acknowledgment. “Very well. Please wait a moment,” the first guard replies. He turns to the entrance and calls out, “Announcing Avicellus to Lady Vittoria!”

After a brief pause, a servant emerges from within the loggia. The servant, dressed in a simple but elegant livery, gestures for Avicellus to enter. “You may proceed. Lady Vittoria is expecting you,” he says, leading Avicellus into the interior.

Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, with sunlight filtering through the elegant arches of the loggia. As Avicellus enters, he sees Vittoria seated at a beautifully crafted wooden table adorned with a vase of fresh flowers. She looks up with a welcoming smile, her demeanor composed yet open. Vittoria Bardi is a woman of striking presence. She has long, dark hair that cascades in loose waves, framing her heart-shaped face. Her deep green eyes are both intelligent and discerning, sparkling with determination and ambition. She has a fair complexion, complemented by a subtle blush on her cheeks, giving her an air of vitality.

It is known that Vittoria often dresses elegantly, favoring richly colored fabrics like emerald green and deep burgundy, adorned with intricate patterns and embroidery that reflect her noble status. Her attire is practical yet stylish, allowing for ease of movement while maintaining an impression of grace. She carries herself with poise, exuding confidence that speaks to her upbringing among the influential families of Florence.

“Welcome, Avicellus,” she says, gesturing for him to take a seat across from her. “I’m pleased to see you. Please, let us speak freely.”

"Not as freely as you think," Avicellus says in a whispered tone. He then tells her about the eavesdroppers and suggests that they retreat to a deeper part of the building to have their conversation away from prying ears.

Vittoria’s expression shifts from welcoming to concerned as Avicellus whispers about the eavesdroppers.

She leans closer, her voice dropping to match his intensity. “Eavesdroppers? Here?”

After a brief moment of contemplation, she nods. “Very well. Follow me.”

She stands and leads Avicellus through the loggia, taking a winding path through the halls of the estate.

The walls are adorned with fine tapestries and portraits of notable Bardi ancestors, but Avicellus can sense the urgency in her stride. They pass through an elegant sitting room before entering a small study at the back of the building, its heavy wooden door closed behind them.

Inside, the atmosphere feels more intimate and secure. A large desk covered in parchment and books sits in the center, while a small fire crackles in the hearth, casting flickering shadows on the walls. Vittoria shuts the door firmly and turns to Avicellus. “Now, we can speak freely. What is it you wish to discuss?”

Avicellus begins with diplomacy and discretion. “As you know, we have at least one friend in common. Well, it seems you may have many more friends than that. Friends that would like to see you control the reins of Florence instead of...others...who currently drive the city with a heavier use of crop and spur.  They speak eloquently of your intellect, abilities, and sense of justice, and I would like to see for myself if they are correct.”

Vittoria arches an eyebrow, intrigued yet cautious. “I appreciate your kind words, Avicellus. It’s true that there are those who support my vision for Florence, but visions and reality often diverge sharply, especially in our turbulent city.” She leans in slightly, her green eyes locking onto his. “What exactly do you propose? Are you here to help me navigate this treacherous landscape, or merely to observe?”

She straightens, her demeanor shifting to one of guarded determination. “If we are to speak candidly, I need to know what your intentions are and how deeply you are willing to engage with the political currents at play. Many are watching, and alliances can be as perilous as they are beneficial.”

“The circle of ‘friends’ I represent is rather eager to assist you substantively.  There is some assistance we have to offer you that will aid you in your governing of this great state and in navigating the treacherous path you must take if you are to do it.  If you are indeed as just and virtuous as reputed, our gift to you would be given freely, for the benefit of all the citizens. I seek neither position nor favor for myself, but merely wish to ensure that I would not empower one who would be merely the next tyrant rather than a liberator and just ruler.”

Vittoria’s expression shifts from curiosity to contemplation, her brow furrowing slightly as she processes Avicellus’s words. “A gift? From friends I have yet to meet?” She gestures for him to continue, clearly intrigued but still weighing the implications. “If you are genuinely willing to support my cause, I would like to understand more about these friends and what they envision for Florence. How do you see their interests aligning with the welfare of the people?”

She leans forward, her voice dropping to a more intimate tone. “Tell me about this gift. What do you think it could provide me, and how might it help in my endeavor to unseat those who have long held power through fear and oppression? If I am to become a true leader, I need more than mere words—I need tools, allies, and resources.”

“It is itself a tool that can provide you with an augmentation to your wisdom, prudence, and intuition.  It may seem small and inconsequential, but it is not to be underestimated.  Our vision is merely one of a new Florence wherein the people’s lives are made to flourish through just and temperate rule. For too long, those who controlled the fate of this city have been deeply invested in the accumulation of wealth, in settling scores and instilling fear, and in self-aggrandizement at the expense of noble and peasant alike. Now, tell me: what is your approach to those issues and that kind of rule?”

Vittoria’s gaze sharpens, and she leans back slightly, clearly considering Avicellus’s words with a mix of admiration and caution. “Your eloquence speaks of a keen awareness of the struggles in Florence, and I appreciate your ambition for change. However,” she continues, her tone measured, “change is not as simple as casting aside those who have long ruled with an iron fist. Power is a delicate balance, and I believe in the necessity of understanding one’s opponents, even those who may seem tyrannical.”

She pauses, her eyes glinting with determination. “My approach involves not merely opposition but reform. I believe in fostering an environment where trust can flourish, where the people feel they have a stake in their governance. If the citizens are to rise against their oppressors, they must believe in something greater than themselves—something that promises stability and prosperity.”

Vittoria sits up straighter, her voice resolute. “I seek to implement policies that prioritize the welfare of the people, focusing on education, trade, and fair taxation. I would rather earn the loyalty of the citizens than compel it through fear. But to enact such a vision, I need allies who share this understanding and commitment. Tell me more about this tool you wish to offer, and how it might assist me in these efforts.”

Avicellus responds with a smile, “You speak wisely. One of the things I would urge you to consider, should you have the opportunity in the future, is also to treat the family of the hopefully soon-to-be former tyrants with mercy. Not that a tyrant or oppressor should be able to escape justice, as that would only instill resentment in the people for the new ruler and encourage boldness on the part of the tyrant to regain his former station. No, justice must be served, but it must be measured justice through the rule of law. For too long, the states of this peninsula have been torn apart from within by warring families looking to settle scores via vendetta.  Not all members of a tyrant’s family are themselves tyrants. They do not deserve death or even dispossession. In fact, some may even deserve a seat at the councilors’ table. What say you to that?”

Vittoria’s expression shifts as she absorbs Avicellus’s words, her brow furrowing slightly in contemplation. “Your point is both astute and pragmatic,” she replies slowly. “Mercy, when wielded wisely, can transform enemies into allies, fostering a sense of unity in a city that has been rife with division and bloodshed. However, I fear that too much mercy might be perceived as weakness by those who would seek to exploit it.”

She leans forward, her voice earnest. “I agree that measured justice is essential, and a tyrant’s family should not bear the sins of their kin indiscriminately. If they are willing to distance themselves from their predecessor’s legacy and genuinely support a new order, then perhaps a role in governance or counsel could be a way to heal old wounds.”

Vittoria’s gaze meets Avicellus’s, her tone firm. “But make no mistake: I will not hesitate to enforce the rule of law against those who would threaten this new beginning. Trust must be earned, and those who wield power must do so with integrity. The path to reform is fraught with peril, and I must be prepared for those who would oppose it. That is where your offering may prove invaluable.”

She gestures toward the Sage Statue concealed within Avicellus’s robes. “How can this tool enhance my capacity for wisdom and prudence? What is its true nature?”

Surprised that Vittoria’s wisdom and perception are already so sharp as to allow her to have spotted the statue he was concealing, Avicellus touches the statue as he removes it from its hiding place. As he does so, he makes one final attempt with his Magical Engineering skill to discern its true nature, its powers, and how one uses it. He hopes that holding this statue may assist his own wisdom and discernment. His native skill is not enough to reveal anything new, but with the assistance of the statue, he is indeed able to perceive its nature. He had held it before, so what made the difference? His heightened emotions in this moment? The direct request from Vittoria Bardi? Something else from her now that she was in proximity to both him and the statue?  Alas, the day may come when he will have an answer to that question, but it is not this day.

As Avicellus holds the Sage Statue in his hands, he feels an unusual warmth radiating from it, as if it were alive with its own energy. Focusing on the intricacies of the carving and the deep sapphires set in its eyes, he channels his thoughts through his Magical Engineering skill, attempting to unlock its mysteries.

In that moment of concentration, he senses a gentle surge of clarity wash over him, revealing glimpses of the statue's deeper magic. Although he may not grasp every detail, he understands that the Sage Statue possesses the following properties:

1.     Enhanced Wisdom: The statue grants the holder a temporary boost to their Wisdom and Intelligence scores. In this case, if Avicellus possesses a total bonus of +3 from the statue, it would raise both scores by that amount for the duration of the holder’s focus on it.

2.     Guiding Insight: Once per day, the holder can invoke the statue’s magic to gain advantage on one Wisdom or Intelligence-based check or saving throw. This effect symbolizes the statue's connection to wisdom and the sage-like presence it embodies.

3.     Calm Aura: While held, the statue exudes a calming aura, reducing stress and anxiety in those nearby. This could be particularly beneficial in tense negotiations or discussions.

As these insights crystallize in his mind, Avicellus feels a sense of purpose, realizing that this statue is indeed a meaningful gift for Vittoria. It not only embodies wisdom but also represents his hopes for her potential as a just leader. With newfound clarity, he turns to Vittoria, ready to present the statue and its significance to her.

“How fitting that you should have this,” he says, extending the Sage Statue toward her. “It embodies not just wisdom but the potential for discernment that can aid you in the trials ahead.”

Vittoria gazes at the Sage Statue, her eyes widening as she absorbs the implications of Avicellus’s words. The warmth of the statue and the aura of wisdom it radiates seem to resonate with her ambitions and ideals.

“This is a remarkable gift,” she replies, her voice steady yet laced with gratitude. “It is a testament to your understanding of the burdens of leadership and the importance of wisdom in governance. Your insights on justice and mercy resonate deeply with me, and I assure you that I intend to lead with a measured hand.”

She gently takes the statue from Avicellus, feeling its weight and the calm it exudes. “To possess such a symbol of wisdom is both an honor and a responsibility. I will cherish it, and I promise to uphold the principles of justice and fairness in my rule. Your belief in me means more than you know.”

Vittoria then pauses, looking Avicellus in the eyes, her expression turning serious. “Tell me, what else might your circle of friends offer? I sense that this is just the beginning of our alliance.”

Avicellus begins cautiously. “Well, one of the chief things we can offer you next is an ally. No, not ourselves, but hopefully a former enemy made a friend.  You have had many dealings with the Medicis, and the Bardis must know the members of that family better than any other outsider.  Your path will certainly be easier if you did not have the full force of the Medici family resisting you. If you were serious about being open to working with one of the more reasonable, wise, and just members of the Medici clan -- one who would not be opposed to seeing the Medicis take a secondary role to the affairs in Florence -- who would it be? Think carefully, and use the statue to guide your answer, for that is the next person I shall approach with a ‘gift’.”

Vittoria’s brow furrows in thought as she considers Avicellus’s proposition. She grips the Sage Statue firmly, her expression shifting from curiosity to contemplation.

“The Medici family is a complicated web of ambition and power,” she begins, her voice steady. “There are a few members who possess the capacity for reason, but none shine as brightly as Lorenzo de’ Medici, often called ‘Lorenzo the Magnificent.’ He has a mind for both art and politics, and while he is not without his flaws, he has shown an inclination toward diplomacy rather than conflict.”

Vittoria pauses, her gaze drifting as if she’s weighing the potential risks and rewards. “Lorenzo values knowledge and has cultivated relationships with intellectuals and artists. If you were to approach him with a gift like this statue, he might see it as a sign of respect rather than hostility. He could be a powerful ally in our pursuit of a just Florence.”

She looks back at Avicellus, her eyes filled with determination.

“But we must tread carefully,” Vittoria continues, her tone now serious. “Lorenzo has his ambitions, and while he may be open to collaboration, he is also protective of his family's interests. If he perceives even a hint of treachery or if he feels threatened, he could easily become an adversary instead of an ally.”

She shifts slightly, her fingers brushing the statue. “If you choose to approach him, I recommend presenting the statue in a way that emphasizes its wisdom and potential for growth. Frame it as a symbol of shared aspirations for Florence’s future. If he sees this as a genuine offer rather than a ploy, he may be more receptive.”

Vittoria locks her gaze onto Avicellus. “But understand this: our goal is to ensure that whoever holds power does so for the benefit of the people. If Lorenzo's past actions suggest otherwise, we may need to reconsider our approach. Are you prepared to navigate these treacherous waters?”

Avicellus smiles broadly, although he does this to conceal how much he is taken aback at hearing her mention Lorenzo. Lorenzo! A prominent Medici himself!?  “Well,” Avicellus says, “you will be quite pleased to know that Lorenzo is indeed how that statue came to be in your hands.  It is safe to say that he is ‘open to collaboration,’ but it does not seem that he himself wishes to head the Medici family...at least not directly. Is there another Medici family member, perhaps a young man with the right mindset who is respected within the family but who does not already have a position of status and power to jealously guard?”

Vittoria’s expression shifts slightly, revealing a glimmer of interest mixed with contemplation. She leans in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “There is one such young man. My cousin, Giovanni de’ Medici. He’s not as involved in the family’s machinations as the others, preferring to focus on his studies and charitable works. He possesses a sense of integrity that many in the family lack, and he genuinely wishes for the good of Florence.

However,” she continues, her brow furrowing slightly, “his family ties are a double-edged sword. While his intentions are noble, he would still be viewed with suspicion by some. The Medici have long held power, and the old guard may resist any notion of collaboration with a faction they see as a threat.”

Vittoria takes a moment to consider Avicellus’s earlier words. “If you could reach Giovanni, perhaps he could be the bridge we need to mend the divide between our ambitions. But how would you propose we approach him, given his position?”

“M’Lady,” says Avicellus as he rises from his chair, “leave that part to me. If indeed this Giovanni cousin is all you say, I shall have a very simliar conversation with him. Whatever the result, positive or negative, I shall report back to you so you are aware.  With that, I must bid you a good day, as I now have another meeting to arrange.”

Vittoria rises as well, a look of gratitude softening her features. “Thank you, Avicellus. Your discretion and commitment to our cause mean more than you know. I look forward to hearing about your meeting with Giovanni.”

She gestures towards the door, her demeanor shifting back to one of poised authority as she addresses her attendants. “Please see that Avicellus is escorted out properly. Ensure he has everything he needs.”

As Avicellus makes his way to the door, he feels the weight of the conversation lingering in the air. He offers a final nod to Vittoria, a shared understanding of their alliance evident between them. “Until next time, M’Lady.”

Stepping outside, Avicellus blends into the shadows, his keen senses alert as he moves quietly through the loggia’s opulent halls. The architecture towers above him, intricate frescoes adorning the ceilings, but his focus remains sharp on his surroundings.

He navigates the corridors, keeping an eye out for any signs of the eavesdroppers. With his stealth check successful, he slips through the space unnoticed. As he rounds a corner, he spots a slight movement—a figure shifting subtly near a doorway. Avicellus recognizes them as one of the guards from earlier, casually conversing with another.

Listening carefully, he hears nothing that indicates they’ve intercepted any sensitive information. Their demeanor seems relaxed, and Avicellus feels a sense of relief wash over him. It appears his conversation with Vittoria remains secure.

He continues onward, exiting the loggia into the bustling streets of Florence, the evening sun casting a warm glow on the vibrant city. With his next steps clear in his mind, Avicellus feels a sense of accomplishment, having navigated the political landscape with skill and finesse.

As he fades into the crowd, he ponders the path ahead. The challenges may be numerous, but the alliances he forges will be essential to shaping Florence's future.
